Outdoors show coming to Butler
The second annual Moraine Angler/Outdoor Adventure Show takes place Feb. 25 and 26 at the Butler Days Inn.
This show, presented by the Mental Health Association of Butler County as its prime fund-raiser, debuted last year as an anglers show at the Atrium in Prospect.
"We decided to add an outdoors venue to this year's show and we needed to move to a bigger place," show co-chairman Joe Lutz said. "Fishing is a big thing in this area, but we're trying to reach an even broader market."
Last year's show had 26 vendors and drew 400 people despite a heavy snowstorm that weekend.
This year's show will have 60 vendors and Lutz anticipates a crowd of 1,500 to 2,000 people.
"We've done a lot of heavy advertising," he said. "We printed 70,000 place mats and 8,000 dollar-off coupons."
Show hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 25 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 26. A wide variety of door prizes, including fishing lures and gift certificates, will be given away every hour.
Scheduled seminars include fishing for muskies, kayak demonstrations, lure action presentations, scuba diving, coyote calling, fall small-mouth fishing on Lake Chautauqua, catching big carp, fishing for steelheads, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, panning for gold locally and north country trail.
The swimming pool will be used for demonstrations on fishing lures, kayaking and scuba diving.
"Neil Baney's panning for gold seminar is very interesting, and Trapper John, who has written books on home remedies, will be on hand to talk about treating spider bites and other such things," Lutz said.
"Howard Wagner is well-known and well-versed in muskie fishing. We definitely have some quality presentations."
Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children 12 and under. Children under 5 will be admitted free.
All proceeds will benefit the Mental Health Association.
"(Co-chairman) Don Callen and I have been going to the big outdoors show every year in Monroeville and got to know a lot of the seminar hosts there," Lutz said. "We distributed our business cards and got some of those people to come here.
"We want to continue making this show an annual event. In a few years, hopefully, people will look forward to our show like people look forward to the outdoor show in Monroeville, car show in Pittsburgh and similar events."
