Joan Marie Peace Whelpley, 82, of Brockway, Pa., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday after a lengthy illness. She passed away peacefully in her beloved home.

Joan was born Nov. 15, 1933, in Stump Creek, Pa., to the late Clair and Olive Reed Peace. She was a 1951 graduate of the Sykesville High School. On April 14, 1956, she married Frederick E. Whelpley, and they made their home on their cherished farm in Brockway. Fred preceded her in death Dec. 22, 2003.

Joan was a longtime member of the Moorhead United Methodist Church and belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was retired from the Brockway Public Library, where she had worked for more than 20 years. She enjoyed cooking, reading, doing puzzles, growing and arranging flowers, and crocheting. She painted her own Christmas cards each year. She was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was preceded in death by her son, Mark Reed Whelpley; her brother, Robert Peace; her sisters, Elizabeth Beardsley and Bessie McCullough; and her daughter-in-law, Charlene (Statler Huffman) Whelpley.

Joan's kind, loving, generous Christian example will be missed by her survivors, including her daughter, Sue (John) Greaves of Slippery Rock; her son, Fred G. “Bub” Whelpley of Brockway; two grandsons, Robert (Rachel) Greaves and Eric (Amanda) Greaves; one granddaughter, Ashley (Lucas) Sheaffer; and four great-grandchildren, Lillian, Wesley and Kayleigh Greaves and Lucy Sheaffer.

WHELPLEY — A private memorial service celebrating the life of Joan Marie Peace Whelpley, who died Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, will be conducted with the Rev. Terry Felt officiating.
