Good as new?
BUFFALO TWP — Carl Bowser has tasted glory in his relatively brief Sprint car racing career.
Now he's looking for more.
Bowser, 26, a Sarver resident and Freeport graduate, is hopeful of doing more traveling this season.
“Ideally, we'll do a few more All-Star shows and hit the Outlaw circuit a couple of times,” he said. “But we have to get some things ironed out first.
“We've been going through a frustrating stretch ... I'm anxious to start getting some wins.”
It's been almost a year exactly since Bowser last reached victory lane at Lernerville Speedway. That win on May 11 of last season is his only feature triumph at the Sarver oval since winning the Sprint points championship in 2011.
Now in his ninth year of racing, Bowser owns six career feature wins at Lernerville.
“We experimented with a few new things last season and, frankly, we had a bad year,” he said. “We've got a new car this year and we're setting it up the old way ... the way we were successful.”
The Bowser race team has two new cars, actually. Bowser's parents — including his father, Terry, a former Sprint driver himself — bought a new Sprint car to serve as a back-up.
“I miss it terribly,” Terry Bowser said of racing. “Every time a new season comes around, the yearning is there to get back behind the wheel.
“I did it for fun. I always wanted to do it and I did it. Carl wants a future in this. I believe in him. Our goal as a team is to make him faster. That's what our funding is dedicated toward.”
Terry Bowser's last season of racing was 2008. He's been a member of his son's pit crew since.
Carl's season did not start as scheduled two weeks ago. A cracked engine block, discovered in the pits that evening, prevented him from hitting the speedway on opening night.
“We had that problem at the end of last year and we had it welded,” Bowser said. “We just didn't weld it enough.”
Bowser finished fourth in his heat and 13th in the feature last week. He will be competing in the All-Star Sprint show at Lernerville this Friday.
“I feel like I've got something to prove,” he said.
The motor Bowser drove to victory lane on in recent years — a motor they bought from Lernerville all-time Sprint wins leader Ed Lynch Jr. — has since been sold to a Sprint driver in California.
“It was getting old,” Terry Bowser said of the motor. “It was good to us, but we had to get newer stuff. We're still shaking everything down.
“We know the potential is there with Carl. He finished ahead of Dave Blaney in a race at Sharon last year. We want to get to the point where he's competitive with the All-Stars and Outlaws on a regular basis.”
Regardless of how that develops, Bowser will continue to race at Lernerville on Friday nights.
“This place is six miles from home,” his father reasoned. “We'd be foolish to drive right past here to head somewhere else.”
