Pointing ahead

Sprint driver Brandon Spithaler of Evans City tightens up a rear tire prior to winning the feature last Friday at Lernerville Speedway.

BUFFALO TWP — Forgive Brandon Spithaler if he has a change of heart.

The 21-year-old Evans City driver of the No. 22 Sprint car had no intentions of running for points at any track this season.

“We had no concrete plans or goals going into the year,” Spithaler said. “We wanted to hit a few different tracks, do a couple of all-star shows, that’s about it.”

His father and prime crew member, Frank Spithaler, agreed.

“Whatever happens, happens,” he said. “That was the approach.”

And plenty is happening.

For the third straight year, Spithaler has recorded two feature wins at Mercer Raceway Park — one of them wingless this season. Last Friday, he picked up his first-ever feature victory at Lernerville Speedway.

It was also his first feature win at any track other than Mercer.

“I got to the point where I dreaded coming here,” Frank Spithaler admitted. “We couldn’t hit the set-up. We’d start out well ... then failure. We were a 10th-place car.”

But on May 17, Brandon had a strong run and finished second in Lernerville’s Sprint feature, trailing only Ed Lynch Jr., the track’s all-time Sprint victory leader.

There was no Lynch last week, no problem for Spithaler — and no apprehension for his father.

“For the first time in a long time, I was excited to come to this track,” Frank Spithaler said. “I liked our prospects. I couldn’t wait to get here.”

Suddenly, Brandon is sitting at the top of the Sprint points standings at the Sarver oval.

“We’re going to have to make a decision soon on the rest of this season,” Brandon said. “I’d like to experience racing at Attica, but they run on Friday nights.

“If we’re going after the points, we have to be here. We weren’t planning on coming last week (May 24) because we were at Wayne County running the BOSS (Buckeye 360) Series. Lernerville got rained out that night, otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about points.

“Now it’s something we may have to look at,” he admitted.

Spithaler’s past frustrations at the Sarver oval made him anxious to try some other Friday night venue.

“When you’re not competing well, you don’t want to come,” he reasoned. “But my dad said we have to keep racing here until we win one. Then we can stop coming.

“But once I win one, I’m gonna want to keep coming.”

Now he has that elusive win. And he credits his crew for making it possible.

Spithaler’s crew includes his father Frank, Tom Burkey, “Big” Rich McConnell, Angela Gant and Justin Hoffman.

“The track changes from hot laps to the heat to the feature,” Spithaler said. “You have to adjust accordingly. We guessed right on the set-up and it paid off.

“I owe a lot to my crew. The car was fantastic. I feel like we’re hooked up and ready to win some more.”
