Just between friends
BUFFALO TWP — Bob Warren and Rick Regalski are far down the Modified points list at Lernerville Speedway.
Neither has come close to winning a feature as of yet.
But both Slippery Rock drivers figure to be fixtures at the track for the forseeable future.
“I’d love to see my son race a car here someday,” Warren, 36, said of 10-year-old son Robby.
Warren was Lernerville’s Modified Rookie of the Year last season, finishing 13th in points with 190. His best finish in a feature was seventh.
His wife, Tiffany, served on Tommy Marshall’s Modified racing crew nearly a decade ago.
“Bob wanted to start out in a Sprint car and I said no way,” his wife said. “I’ve got some background in Modifieds, so this was the way to go for us.
“One of our first dates was at a race track and he wanted to get behind the wheel of a (race) car almost right away.”
Warren is 12th in Modifified points at Lernerville so far this season. Regalski, in his rookie year, is 14th in the standings.
Regalski’s uncle, Ralph McBride, is a former race driver at Lernerville. Regalski and Warren live only a few miles apart and always pit together at Lernerville.
“We help each other out,” Warren said. “If one of us has a part or two the other one needs, we exchange it. We’re good friends.”
Regalski, 43, said he has the equipment necessary to succeed in dirt track racing.
“I’ve got five motors ... I have the equipment to be dangerous,” he said. “This is my year to get seat time, to experience what it’s like running around out there.
“Next year, I’ll get serious about competing.”
Warren and Regalski have been as chummy on the track as off it. Two weeks ago, they were even in a wreck together.
“He’ll finish 11th, I’ll finish 12th, I’ll be 14th, he’ll be 15th — we finish right next to each other in races all the time,” Regalski said. “It’s strange how that’s been working out.”
“Sometimes wrecks can’t be helped,” Warren said. “One guy spins out, the otheris in the wrong place at the wrong time, it happens. We’ve done damage to each other.”
Racing has become a family activity for the Warrens. Tiffany helps out in the pits while Robby and 6-year-old sister Jaylynn frequent the track on Friday nights.
Regalski spent 13 years (1987-2000) working with a drag racing team on the national circuit. He was on the road from February through December.
“I’ve always been around racing and now I’m actually racing,” he said. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”
Now he and Warren are doing it together. But they don’t want to get too close to each other on the track again.
“We’re running for 17th place ... I don’t want to tear my crap up,” Regalski said, laughing.
