SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock and Grove City will meet in the District 10 Class AAA baseball semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Slippery Rock University's Jack Critchfield Park.

The game will be preceded by a Class AA semifinal between Mercyhurst Prep and Sharpsville, starting at 4 p.m.

PINE TWP — Chris Smith, 16, of Butler recently won the Outstanding Bench Presser and Deadlifter awards at the Sons of Thunder Powerlifting's Powerhouse Teen Bench Press and Deadlift Battle.Smith weighs 225 pounds. He bench pressed 335 and deadlifted 520 pounds.The event was held at the Pine-Richland Youth Center.

The Seneca Valley boys 4x100 relay team of Jordan Brown, Forrest Barnes, Bradley Banks and Jonathan Dorogy will be competing at the PIAA Class AAA Championship Meet this weekend in Shippensburg. The quartet has broken the school record in the event three times this season, first with a time of 43.03 seconds at the Mars Invitational in April. Then, at the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Qualifier, the team ran a 42.93. At last week's WPIAL Championships, the standard was lowered again to 42.6.The original record had stood for 32 years. In 1981, the foursome of Kelly Harancher, George Smith, Dan Swingle and Brent Bishop teamed up to run the event in 43.3.

ERIE — Seneca Valley graduate and Penn State Behrend sophomore Dylan Bilka is competing in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Championships today in La Crosse, Wis.Bilka's school-record vault of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches is third best in Division III this year. He was recently named Field Athlete of the Year in the Mideast Region.

Mike Krzyzewski has decided to remain coach of the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team.Krzyzewski will try to lead the Americans to a third straight gold medal. He was was to hold a news conference to confirm his return Thursday at Duke.The Hall of Fame coach has led the Americans since 2005, winning gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and the 2010 world basketball championship.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR honored a pair of its most famous and successful families with inductions into the Hall of Fame.Past champion Dale Jarrett joined father Ned in the hall and master mechanic Maurice “Chief” Petty became the fourth member of one of NASCAR's most royal families to be selected.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Alain Vigneault was fired as coach of the Vancouver Canucks, along with assistants Rick Bowness and Newell Brown.Vigneault, the Canucks’ all-time wins leader led the club to six Northwest Division titles, two Presidents’ Trophy titles and the 2011 Stanley Cup final.
