Eighteen recreational therapy students from Slippery Rock University completed Camp R.O.C.K (Recreational Opportunities Connecting Kids) on July 1.

The camp is an extended-school-year program offered as a partnership between Slippery Rock University's Recreational Therapy program and the Butler YMCA at the YMCA CampARMCO Park.

The SRU students completed assessments and planned the individualized goal-directed interventions offered for adolescents on the autism spectrum.

Francine Mills, the executive director of the Butler Y, works with Betsy Kemeny, the student supervisor, for the program.

The 23 campers were joined by 20 peer campers from Grove City and Slippery Rock high schools. The high school volunteers modeled typical social behaviors in a natural setting. In addition, SRU music therapy and physician assistant students volunteered at certain portions of the program.

The program, in its sixth year, ran from June 20 to July 1.
