Dale E. Mahan
Dale E. Mahan, 76, of Saxonburg died peacefully Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospice, Cabot, surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 1, 1932, in Middlesex Township, he was the son of James Leroy and Jane (Bryson) Mahan.
He was a teacher for Knoch High School for 37 years, where he was head of the health department and coached basketball and track.
Dale loved coaching. In his 25 years as a coach at Knoch, he led the Knights to two consecutive District 9 titles in basketball. His track teams won 33 consecutive dual meets and three WPIAL section titles. He never had a losing season in his career. He was inducted into the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
Dale attended Slippery Rock College and received his masters at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dale was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member and former elder at the Community Alliance Church in Butler.
Dale managed the Richland Swim Club in Richland Township for 25 years.
Surviving are his wife, Sandra (Getty) Mahan, of 51 years; his mother, Jane (Bryson) Mahan of Cabot; his two sons, James Dale (Melissa) Mahan of Saxonburg and William Lloyd (Stephanie) Mahan of Penn Township; his two daughters, Lisa Faye Mahan of Anchorage, Alaska, and Susan (Glenn) Wendtland of Antoich, Ill.; and nine grandchildren, Sandra, Matthew, Sarah, Megan, Jamie, Christopher, Robert Dale, Olivia and Abbey.
Preceding him in death was his father.
<B>MAHAN</B> Friends of Dale E. Mahan, who died Sunday, April 19, 2009, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>Fox Funeral Home</B>, 410 W. Main St., Saxonburg. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Krajacic officiating.
