Beating No. 1 at home usually brings the fans rushing onto the court. The crowd at Florida State got to do it twice in one night.

Alexander Johnson broke the game's final tie with 1:06 to play Wednesday night, and the Seminoles beat top-ranked Duke 79-74, the second time in three years Florida State beat the Blue Devils when they were on top of the poll.

When Duke was called for a foul with 1.7 seconds to play and the Seminoles ahead by five, the crowd rushed the court, swamping everyone and everything in its way.

The floor was cleared and Florida State was assessed a technical foul for the premature celebration, but two free throws by each team ended the scoring and the game, and the crowd was back.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzweski had his team — except the five in the game — taken to the locker room before Al Thornton took the final free throws with 1.7 seconds still on the clock. He said he feared for the safety of his players.

"I would think that security is not ready for that type of thing," Krzyzewski said. "We weren't going to win the basketball game, the game was basically over, so why put those kids in harm's way?"

He said that saying anything more about it would be misinterpreted.

"It's an unfortunate situation and let the powers to be handle it ... in front of everybody, though, not behind closed doors," he said.

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said a program like Duke's brings the kind of excitement that causes fans to rush the court after a victory.

"This is uncharted waters for us," Hamilton said. "I'm sure that in the future we'll try to win games by a little larger margin."

Thornton had 26 points and Johnson added 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Seminoles (18-8, 8-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), who lost by one point in overtime at Duke on Feb. 4. Johnson missed the end of that game when he was assessed a technical as his fifth personal for his involvement in a scrape with Shelden Williams. The ACC later determined the technical was a mistake and the officiating crew was suspended for one game.

"I just played ball because I didn't want to think about that," Alexander said of the earlier matchup. "I kind of let that stay in the past, never looked back at it."

Josh Boone scored 17 points and Denham Brown added 16 for the Huskies (26-2, 13-2 Big East), who scored the game's first 18 points. The win was Jim Calhoun's 729th and moved him into a tie for 14th on the career list with Jerry Tarkanian.Solomon Jones had 12 points and 12 rebounds for South Florida (6-22, 0-15), which pulled within 45-42 midway through the second half but lost its 17th straight.

Randy Foye scored 21 points and Allan Ray shook off a sprained knee to add 15 in their final home game. Foye hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 straight points for the Wildcats (23-3, 13-2 Big East) in the second half. Ray played with a brace on his left knee after he sprained it in a loss Sunday at Connecticut.

Acie Law hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Aggies (19-7, 9-6 Big 12) their sixth straight win. Texas A&M got a chance for the upset when Texas' P.J. Tucker, apparently unaware of the time on the shot clock, dribbled around as it expired with 5.9 seconds left.

Omar Williams scored 18 points as the Colonials (25-1, 15-0 Atlantic 10) extended the nation's longest winning streak to 17 games and set a school record for victories in a season. George Washington needs only to beat Charlotte in its regular-season finale on Saturday to become only the fourth A-10 school — and first since Saint Joseph's in 2003-04 — to go undefeated in conference play.

Terence Dials scored 18 points on 9-for-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds as the Buckeyes (22-4, 11-4) clinched at least a share of the Big Ten championship. Ohio State could win the title outright with a victory over Purdue on Sunday. Ron Lewis' layup with 14 seconds left gave the Buckeyes a 54-53 lead.

Randolph Morris scored 22 points and Rajon Rondo added 16 for the Wildcats (19-10, 9-6 Southeastern Conference), who prevented Tennessee's first season sweep since 1998-99.

David Noel had a career-high 26 points in his final home game and the Tar Heels (20-6, 11-4) clinched a tie for second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference and reached 20 victories for the 33rd time in 36 seasons with their ninth win in 10 games. It was the most lopsided margin in the 95-year history of the rivalry.

Joakim Noah had a career-high 37 points, including a school-record 19 free throws, and 11 rebounds as the Gators (23-6, 9-6 Southeastern Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak. Neal Walk had 18 free throws for Florida in 1968.

Mario Chalmers scored 14 points, including two key 3-pointers in the second half, to lead the Jayhawks (21-7, 12-3 Big 12), who beat Colorado for the 34th time in their last 35 meetings.

Mike Henderson scored 16 points and Erek Hansen added 15 for the Hawkeyes (21-8, 10-5 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game losing streak by holding Penn State to a season low in points.Travis Parker scored 13 points for the Nittany Lions (14-13, 6-10), who finished with their best conference record in five years.
