Gertrude Anna 'Bumpy' Keay James
Gertrude Anna “Bumpy” Keay James, 97, of Butler passed peacefully early Thursday morning at her home.
Born on Oct. 12, 1917, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Leopold Klekner and Rosalia Gotch Klekner.
She was a homemaker and the former owner and operator of the Primrose Flower Shop in the Bloomfield area of Pittsburgh.
Bumpy was a member of the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Meridian.
She was an expert seamstress and quilter, talented crafter and a fabulous baker. She loved her morning coffee on the back deck while watching the wildlife — the humming birds that visited were her special favorites. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She loved square-dancing and continued dancing into her 70s.
She was still volunteering at the Seneca Place Nursing Home in Penn Hills at the age of 80 and the Meals on Wheels program when she moved here to Butler. She was a founding member and active volunteer for Kids Day America in Butler for the past 15 years.
Surviving are her daughter, Judith R. Keay Surkosky, and her son, Anthony Keay, both of Butler; her grandchildren, Cynthia (John) Hackett Jr. of Verona, Sondra (Kurt) Pipes of Butler, Dr. Andrea (Carl) York of Rochester, N.Y., Dr. Stuart (Dawn) Surkosky of Butler, Sean (Erica) Keay of Westbrook, Maine, and Peter (Valerie) Keay of Norfolk, Va.; her great-grandchildren, Teale (Chad) Bell, Adam (Mariola) Hackett, Andrew Joseph Pipes, Alexandra York, Andrew Walter York, Annaleigh York, Alizabeth York, Addelynne York, Joshua Surkosky, Jacob Surkosky, Jordon Surkosky, Fiona Keay, Devan Keay and Gregory Keay; her great-great-grandchildren, Aislynn Bell, Hazel Bell, Zane Bell and Noah Hackett; her beloved Morkie, Mr. Scruffy; and her numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her four brothers, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter C. Keay, who died in 1960, and Francis X. James, who died in 1985.
James — The friends of Gertrude Anna “Bumpy” Keay James, who passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at theGeibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.The Bereavement Committee of St. Fidelis Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home for a vigil service.A Mass of Catholic burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian, followed by a luncheon at St. Fidelis Social Hall.
