Service honors deceased police chief; FBI offers reward

SAXONBURG — On the 35th anniversary of the murder of borough Police Chief Greg Adams, more than 50 residents, police officers and family members gathered Friday for a memorial service.

“We must remember that Dec. 4 is dark date in the history of our town,” said Chief Joe Beachem.

Adams, 31, was killed in 1980 while conducting a traffic stop.

To mark this anniversary, the FBI announced a reward of up to $100,000 for Donald Eugene Webb, the fugitive wanted for this crime. This reward is payable not only to any person who can lead authorities to the arrest of Webb, but to any person who can take them to the location of Webb's remains.

Webb, one of the longest tenured fugitives ever to appear on the FBI's “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list, now would be 84 years old.

The FBI is committed to bringing Webb, then of Massachusetts, to justice.

Adams was shot about 3 p.m. near the Agway Feed Store on Butler Street. He was shot twice, once in his chest and once under an arm. He also was beaten around his head.

Adams died in the way to Butler Memorial Hospital.

The service began with a state police honor guard presenting the colors, the singing of the national anthem, a prayer and a proclamation from borough Mayor Pam Bauman. Beachem and former Chief Gordon Mainhart spoke.

It concluded with a gun salute, taps and the singing of “God Bless America.”
