Miranda honors season in song
Jay Miranda leapt out of bed to write down song lyrics Tuesday morning.
His wife was less than excited about being woken up at 4 a.m.
“I didn’t want to forget any of the lyrics,” Miranda said.
The Butler BlueSox public address announcer was so enthralled with the team’s performance he wrote a fight song.
Miranda, a 49-year-old Butler native, performed the song during the pep rally before the BlueSox’s first-ever playoff game Wednesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.
Miranda, who used to be in a blues band, sang his song with the Mo Nelson Band before the game. It’s set to the tune of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts “I hate myself for loving you.”
“I got inspired by what the guys have been doing all season,” Miranda said. “Winning 40 games, a club record was fantastic. These lyrics kept swimming in my head and I jumped on the computer and started writing them down.”
Butler BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski chuckled at being mentioned in the song.
“It was very interesting. Especially since he came up with it at 4 in the morning,” Rebyanski said. “I had a good laugh and I know everyone in the front office thought it was cool. too.”
Miranda wrote a version for the playoffs and has another set for the regular season.
The Mo Nelson Band offered to let Miranda record the song with them.
He plans to take them up on his offer. The players seemed to enjoy it.
“It’s been a fun summer. For us to make it to the playoffs is special since it’s our first time” Butler BlueSox player Cody Herald said. “He’s a special guy and for him to do something like that means a lot to us.”
Butler making the playoffs meant a lot to Miranda. The BlueSox moved to Butler in 2009.
He followed the clinching game closely last Saturday on the internet.
Before Butler’s 5-0 Game 1 loss to Chillicothe, Miranda kept with superstition and played country music during fielding and rap music during batting practice.
“I was one of the original hirees for the Butler BlueSox. Me, Pat Reddick and Matt Cunningham have been here since the beginning,” Miranda said. “There’s been a lot of heartbreak, sometimes on the last day of the season. It was special to see them clinch on the road.”
