Sophia Yaracs

Sophia (Potyka) Yaracs passed away peacefully at Concordia Lutheran Home in Cabot on Sunday, July 3, 2022.

She was born at her parents’ home in Lyndora on Jan. 8, 1927, to Michael Potyka and Sophia (Mondell) Potyka.

She was a member of Lyndora Presbyterian Church and was the organist there for 10 years. Sophia graduated from Butler Senior High School in 1945 where she received the DAR Good Citizen Award, Typing Award and a college scholarship. She was a valedictorian speaker at her commencement. She is a member of All Saints Parish, St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church in Meridian. On July 3, 1945, she married Andrew Yaracs Jr. and they were married for 67 years.

In 1941, Sophia participated in organizing the Lyndora Girls Junior Drum and Bugle Corps with the sponsorship of the Lyndora Volunteer Fire Company. She was always involved in musical activities and was a chaperone for the General Butler Vagabonds for many years as they traveled all over the United States. In addition to being a housewife and mother, she was the bookkeeper for her husband’s auto body shop and then managed Yaracs Music Center. She was also employed at Sun Drug in the Greater Butler Mart and then was assistant manager at Point Drug. She loved and enjoyed her family, and sharing Hungarian recipes and heritage.

She is survived by her children, Ronald Yaracs and his wife, Patricia (Fleming), Andrew M. Yaracs and his, wife Gloria (Slater), and Barbara (Yaracs) Bailey and her husband, Paul; grandchildren, Aaron Yaracs, Adam Yaracs, Christopher Yaracs and Bradley Bailey; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Sophia Yaracs was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brothers, Andrew Potyka and Louis Potyka.

YARACS — A private funeral for Sophia (Potyka) Yaracs, who died Sunday, July 3, 2022, was held Sunday, July 10, 2022, at the GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 East Cunningham St., Butler.

Memorial Donations can be made to Concordia Lutheran Ministries Foundation, Good Samaritan Hospice of Cabot or Good Samaritan Endowment Fund.
