ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Butler County Community College women’s basketball team wound up No. 6 in the nation following a 52-46 loss to Mohawk Valley (N.Y.) Saturday at the NJCAA Division III National Championships.

Ashley Campbell scored 17 points for the Pioneers (17-11).

BC3 was ahead 44-41 with three minutes left, but sank only four of 10 free throws down the stretch.

In Friday’s action, Casey Fleeger netted 22 points and Katresa Savisky had 16 as BC3 defeated Joliet (Ill.) Junior College 69-56.

Emily Wise and Campbell each had 10 points for the Pioneers.

CABOT — Based on capturing their respective age groups at the Western Pennsylvania Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship, three youths sponsored by St. Joseph Council #11388 of Cabot will advance to the state championship this weekend.Dan Hutchinson of Saxonburg (22 of 25) won the 10-year-old division, Dominick Bucko of Butler (23 of 25) was the 12-year-old winner and Christine Gryzbek of Tarentum (22 of 25) the 14-year-old winner.The state championship will be held at Trinity Catholic High School in Camp Hill on Saturday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M — Slippery Rock University's Cameron Daugherty earned All-American honors by placing fourth in the men's pole vault at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday.Daugherty cleared 5.13 meters, easily outdistancing his previous best of 4.91 meters.Whitney Hendershot finished 10th in the women's high jump (1.68 meters) and will advance to her third NCAA Championships this weekend.Brady Wert finished 12th in the men's heptathlon with 4,595 points.
