Highmark's Wexford medical project may impact Cranberry plans
WEXFORD — Highmark broke ground Thursday for a medical mall on Route 19 that seems to put into question a similar mall that had been proposed for Cranberry Township.
Highmark and Butler Health Systems in June said they were discussing the construction of a similar facility on 25 acres in the Cranberry Woods Business Park.
Earlier this year, Principo Advisors, a Highmark subsidiary bought land for $8.9 million from Mine Safety Appliances, that originally owned all of the 300-acre business park.
Now Highmark is concentrating on the 174,000-square-foot Wexford facility at 12311 Perry Highway. That is about 5 miles south of Cranberry.
While the new mall would seem to put construction of a similar mall in Cranberry in question, Highmark CEO Dr. William Winkenwerder said in a published report that the insurance giant may “do something” with the various properties that it has bought in the past two years.
The Wexford medical mall’s planned services include medical and radiation oncology, basic and advanced imaging, physical and occupational therapy, a women’s care center, a lab and pharmacy, primary and specialty care, pediatrics, as well as a drop-off child care center, and a resource library.
The facility is expected to be completed by 2014.
