Electrical outages hit Cranberry businesses

CRANBERRY TWP — An electrical outage Tuesday afternoon caused widespread disruption along a stretch of Route 19 as about a dozen fire trucks from several fire departments responded to three fire calls.

The electrical surge also caused a significant traffic jam up and down Route 19 as several township workers stood at traffic lights and monitored the traffic flow.

According to Penn Power’s website, the power outage affected nearly 2,000 people in the Cranberry area.

The outage was weather-related, the statement said, and power was expected to be restored to all customers by 5 p.m.

It’s not immediately clear how many buildings were affected, but fire crews responded to calls at the Goodwill, Jos. A. Bank and Rite Aid businesses, all within a half-mile of each other on Route 19.

The three calls all came within about 15 minutes of each other, starting just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Several of those businesses reportedly had smoke in the buildings, although no fires occurred.

The first emergency call was at the Rite Aid store at the intersection of Route 19 and Rochester Road at 1:50 p.m. with smoke in the building.

Five minutes later, another call came in for the Goodwill store just north on Route 19.

The final call came 2:11 p.m. at the Jos. A. Bank store in the Streets of Cranberry shopping plaza.
