State legislator, sister charged in ghost-work plot
PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia lawmaker has been charged with funneling pay to his sister through a ghost worker because she couldn’t be on his payroll.
Authorities say state Rep. Jose “J.P.” Miranda hired a ghost worker who gave part of his $36,000 salary to Miranda’s sister.
The 34-year-old Miranda and his 28-year-old sister, Michelle Wilson, face perjury, criminal conspiracy and conflict-of-interest charges. They are expected to surrender to authorities by Tuesday morning.
The indictment released today says that Wilson worked at the office, but had to be kept off the payroll because of state ethics rules.
Officials say ghost worker Timothy Duckett spent his days at an auto body shop. District Attorney Seth Williams says Duckett is cooperating and won’t be charged.
It was not clear if Miranda and Wilson have lawyers.
