Freeport OKs contracts for $3.57 million athletic complex

BUFFALO TWP — The Freeport School Board has awarded contracts worth $3.57 million to construct the district’s athletic complex.

Construction is expected to begin by Nov. 1 and will be completed next summer before fall sports begin.

The new stadium will be on the campus with the high school and middle school off Route 356.

This fall the Yellowjackets football team is playing its games on Swartz Field in Freeport, its home since the 1920s, for the final time.

The new complex will be home to football, girls lacrosse and girls and boys soccer games. The plans call for a seating capacity of 2,000 and a turf field.

The new athletic complex will displace the current softball diamond and the district will play its baseball games at Swartz Field for the final season this spring.

This means the new diamonds would need to be completed in time for the spring 2017 season.

The cost for that project is unknown, board President Dan Lucovich said.
