Helen F. Spohn
Helen F. Spohn, 95, of Butler died early Monday at her home.
Born Dec. 25, 1916, in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Nikolai Benchuk and Maria (Utoski) Kewick. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Nick Kewick, following the death of her father at a very young age.
She was a retired deli manager for Thorofare Markets, which had 18 stores in Western Pennsylvania and the Butler area. She retired in 1982 after 20 years.
Helen was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church in Butler, was a life member of the Tanglewood Center and was past president, charter member, life member and trustee for the South Butler Ladies Auxiliary. She also was a member of the AARP and the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Auxiliary. She was a homemaker who enjoyed playing cards, bowling, gardening and spending time with her family. She loved to cook and passed down many traditional recipes to her family.
Surviving are her two sons, Fred M. (Nora) Spohn and John A. (Linda) Spohn, all of Butler; two daughters, Nancy C. (Joseph) Scuro and M. Linda (Larry) Rottman, all of Butler; 11 grandchildren; 10 great- grandchildren; and one sister, Mary J. Spohn of Butler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred J. Spohn, who died, July 7, 1960.
<B>SPOHN</B> — Friends of Helen F. Spohn, who died Monday, May 14, 2012, will be received at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, 432 Center Ave., Butler. The Rev. James Dolan, pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Herman.The Bereavement Committee of St. Michael’s Parish will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home for a parish vigil service.Information also is available at www.geibelfuneralhome.com.
