Sports are filled with fools.

People who commit untimely gaffes, commit inexplicable errors in judgment, create negative attention without reason, etc.

As part of April Fool’s weekend, the time has come to name my Sports Fool of the Year.

And as usual, there are a number of deserving candidates.

Jung-Ho Kang immediately comes to mind. Here’s a guy who signs a multi-million dollar deal with the Pirates, becomes a popular player with the fans, overcomes a gruesome leg injury and appeared on the verge of breaking through as a true star in the National League.

But ... rape allegations in Chicago and a third DUI in South Korea have seemingly derailed all of that. Now Kang is having trouble getting back into the United States.

Foolish, indeed.

But not the winner.

Vanderbilt was leading Northwestern 66-65 with 17 seconds left in their first-round NCAA Tournament game when the Commodores’ Matthew Fisher-Davis fouled Northwestern’s Bryant McIntosh.

Fisher-Davis thought his team was losing at the time.

McIntosh made both free throws — and Vanderbilt lost, 68-66.

Ah, such foolishness. But again, not the winner.

Steeler receiver Antonio Brown threw a damper on his team’s thrilling AFC playoff win at Kansas City by doing a video of the locker room after the game and posting private-type stuff on Facebook.

Unwanted, unnecessary negative attention. That was foolish.

But not fool of the year.

Somebody trumped all of those things.

Your winner — Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

The man had a 28-3 lead on New England early in the third quarter of the Super Bowl — and ran the ball five more times the rest of the game,

The Patriots failed to recover an onsides kick, giving Atlanta the ball on New England’s side of the 50, and the Falcons did nothing with it.

Julio Jones makes a circus catch to give Atlanta a first down inside the Patriot 25-yard line late in the fourth quarter. A field goal salts away a win.

Instead, the Falcons run a pass play that required a deep quarterback drop. Matt Ryan gets sacked for a 12-yard loss. Out of field goal range.

Out of opportunities to salt away what should have been an easy championship.

That qualifies as your Fool of the Year.

Of course, Shanahan was rewarded for that epic collapse by being named head coach of the San Francisco 49ers — who could be termed one of the more foolish franchises in the NFL for their actions over the past couple of years.

Keep a stout heart, all of you fools.
