Bonita “Bonnie” Louise Hardie Vogan

Bonita “Bonnie” Louise Hardie Vogan Christy of Slippery Rock went home to the arms of her savior Friday surrounded by her family.

Bonita was born May 25, 1939, in Harmony to Louis Z. and Vada V. (Frye) Hardie.

Bonnie lived a good portion of her life in Portersville before moving to Slippery Rock.

She had 10 biological children but spent a good portion of her life mentoring and being a mother figure for many children in the community. She showed love and was much loved in return.

In the community, Bonnie was a Red Cross trainer and volunteer for many years as well as being involved in the Boy Scouts of America as a leader, counselor and trainer for more than 25 years. She took an active part in the school her children attended, Portersville Christian School, as a van driver, custodian and parent volunteer. Later when she moved to Slippery Rock, she was active in the Slippery Rock Senior Center for several years until her health declined.

Bonnie worked at Adams Manufacturing and was a personal care giver for several years.

She attended the Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock when she was able.

Bonnie was married to Clyde E. Vogan from March 1956 until his death in December 1966. She married Eugene W. Christy Sr. in September 1968. He passed away in November 1994.

Beside her husbands, she was preceded in death by her oldest son, Clyde E. Christy in June 2015, as well as her parents, two brothers, an infant sister and two grandchildren.

Bonnie was the loving mother of 10 children of which four daughters and five sons survive: Karen Christy, Connie Christy and Robin (Jay) Stahlman, all of Slippery Rock, Virginia (Glenn) Wells of West Sunbury, Dale (Barb) Christy of West Virginia, C. Raymond (Chance) Christy of Butler, Richard (Neva) Christy of Beaver Falls, Eugene Jr. (Amy) Christy of Butler and Douglas Christy of Slippery Rock. She leaves behind 36 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

She also is survived by five brothers, Alexander (Bud) Hardie, Thomas Hardie, Hugh (Skip) Hardie, John Hardie and Danny Hardie. Her surviving sisters are Shirley Dunlevy, Peggy Welker, Janet Hardie, Sally Hardie, Judy Morris, JoAnn Hardie and Debbie George; and she also is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

CHRISTY — Visitation for Bonita “Bonnie” Louise Hardie Vogan Christy, who died Friday, March 4, 2016, will be at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.The funeral service will be at Highland Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock at 11 a.m. Wednesday with visitation at the church from 10 a.m. until the service with the Rev. Doug Turner officiating. Interment will be at Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation.
