Glenn E. “Chips” Ahrens, 84, of Butler passed away at 5:50 p.m. Thursday at VA Butler Healthcare.

He was born June 10, 1928, in Toronto to the late John Edward Ahrens and Mary Lavina Topping Ahrens.

Mr. Ahrens was a member of the First English Lutheran Church. He was a member of the board of directors of the Butler County Symphony Association and the Foxburg Golf Hall of Fame. Mr. Ahrens was an officer and life member of the Elks Club Lodge 170 and was a member of the American Legion Post 117.

He enjoyed golf and hosted the Muntz Avenue Open at the Foxburg Country Club for 35 years to raise money for Children's Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War.

Mr. Ahrens is survived by three sons, Mark Ahrens and his fiancée, Monica Snyder, of Butler, John Ahrens of Butler, and Grant Ahrens of Slippery Rock; two daughters, Judy Doyle and her husband, Jim, of Stafford, Va., and Jane McCulley and her husband, Robert, of Bridgeport, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Mike and Dylan Ahrens, Bobby and Ryan McCulley and Janson Doyle; one brother, Bruce Cameron McLaughlin and his wife, Nancy, of Minnesota; one sister, Ruth Anne Schuster and her husband, Duane, of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Aldine Lettermann.

AHRENS — Friends of Glenn E. “Chips” Ahrens, who passed away Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Miller Funeral Home, 124 E. North St., Butler.Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First English Lutheran Church, 241 N. Main St., Butler, with the Rev. James Dollhopf of the First English Lutheran Church officiating. A private burial will take place in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society of Greater Pittsburgh, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205.Online condolences can be given at www.thompson-miller.com.
