Margaret Jane “Peg” (Hooks) Plyler

Margaret Jane “Peg” (Hooks) Plyler, 90, of Worthington died Saturday at Sugar Creek Rest.

She was born Aug. 22, 1927, in Tartown, Pa. She was the daughter of the late Roy Joseph Hooks and Alama (Cousins).

Peg was raised in Bridgeburg, attending a one-room school. After moving to Kittanning, she went to Kittanning High School, graduating in the Class of 1945.

Most of her life she was in the banking profession. She was employed at Farmers National Bank in Kittanning, where she met her future husband, Bob Plyler. They were married in September 1953 by the Rev. Robert Thurau, then the pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Kittanning.

Peg was a longtime member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Worthington, where a number of years she was the financial secretary. She also served on the church council and was a member of the ladies craft class. Church was a big part of her life.

Peg liked working with figures and was then employed by Merchants National Bank of Kittanning. She was branch manager at Worthington and also West Kittanning, from which she retired.

Peg had many interests and hobbies. She loved cross-stitching, crafts, photography, reading, Sudoku puzzles and tending to her flower garden. She was a site council member at Worthington Senior Center, where she enjoyed bowling at Falcon Lanes. She was a big Pirates and Steelers fan and enjoyed tailgating at the Steeler games. Peg also loved to travel, traveling all over Europe and Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Alfred Zellefrow; an infant sister; four brothers, Willis Hooks, the Rev. Gerald Hooks and his wife June, Chamie Hooks, and Joseph Hooks and his wife, Carmen; stepbrothers, Ray Zellefrow and his wife, Luppa, and Harold (Barney) Zellefrow; one step-brother-in-law, Sharon Rimel; and a brother-in-law, James Plyler.

She leaves behind many dear family and friends, including her husband of 63 years, Robert “Bob” Plyler; a son, Robert Plyler Jr. and his wife, Tricia, of Papillion, Neb.; a daughter, Tamra Flick and her husband, Jeff, of Slippery Rock; her former son-in-law, Frank Kersul and Kathy of Olympia, Wash.; four granddaughters, Jennifer Miller and her husband, Tony, of Papillion, Neb., Samantha Kersul and her husband, Alex Hur, of Seattle, Wash., Julie Hull and her husband, Ricky, of Lincoln, Neb., and Madison Flick of Morgantown, W.Va.; seven great-grandchildren, Devin, Molly, Hunter, Kaelen, Trent, Samantha and Hannah; a stepsister, Shirley Rimel of Monroe, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Pat Hooks of Kittanning; a step-sister-in-law, Mary Lou Zellefrow of Kittanning; a brother-in-law, Richard Plyler and his wife, Jessie, of Oxford, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Dot Plyler of Kennett Square, Pa.; and many dear cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their many thanks for the care and comfort given to Peg by Melody Manor and Sugar Creek Rest.

PLYLER — A memorial service for Margaret Jane “Peg” (Hooks) Plyler, who died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 136 W. Main St., Worthington with the Rev. Howard Gillette officiating.Arrangements are entrusted to F.
