William Arner
William “Milton” Arner, 92, of Slippery Rock, Mercer Township, passed away at the Sharon Regional Health System at 4:30 a.m. Friday after a short illness.
He was born in Slippery Rock Township on Oct. 3, 1921, to Lee Carl Arner and Catherine Swartzlander Arner.
He married Mary Elizabeth Carothers on May 28, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 13, 2006.
Milton worked with his father on the family farm until his later 20s. He then worked at Brennmans Hardware Store in Harrisville. Milton went to Cheeseman-Fleeger Motors in Slippery Rock as a mechanic and later to Buckham’s Ford Dealership, also in Slippery Rock. He also worked at Satori Brother’s Strip Mine. In the early 1960s, he owned and operated his own business called Arner’s Saw and Mower, retiring in 1983.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, tinkering, gardening, canning tomatoes and fixing whatever you had broken.
Survivors include one son, James L. Arner, and his wife, Robyn, of Slippery Rock; two daughters, Betty J. “Janie” Montgomery and her husband, Bob, of Harrisville and Doris “Jeanne” Arner and her fiance, Steve Heasley, of Renfrew; one sister, Genevieve Gardner of Franklin; four grandchildren, Ryan Weigle, Christopher Arner, Jessica Weigle Bosco and Melissa Sue Shaffer; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Anna Margaret Dillaman.
ARNER — The family of William “Milton” Arner, who died Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, will receive friends at the Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock, from 4 p.m. until time of service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. James Lewis presiding. Interment will follow at Slippery Rock Cemetery.Memorial contributions may be given to the Slippery Rock Rescue Team for its new building, P.O. Box 117, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
