SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University is seeking veterans interested in participating in its Equine Services for Heroes program.

The free, therapeutic riding program hosted by Storm Harbor Equestrian Center is open to veterans who have cognitive, physical, emotional or social disabilities. The program can accommodate 30 veterans for riding, grooming, tacking and social engagements.

The program is held twice each month, and allows veterans to ride any of the center’s 12 horses at either an indoor arena or along outdoor trails.

Courtney Gramlich, center director, said the program can be a challenging and rewarding experience for veterans. She said riding promotes movement of the legs and pelvis, and some older veterans enjoy memories of working with horses during their service.

“It’s a great opportunity not only for the veterans, but also for university students interested in pursuing a career working with veterans,” Gramlich said.

The program is funded by a $53,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs adaptive sports branch.
