CANTON, Ohio — Mars graduate Matt White will be the punter for the New Orleans Breakers in their USFL playoff game against the Birmingham Stallions at 8 p.m. Saturday at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
A 2014 Mars and 2018 Monmouth University graduate, White had worked out for the NFL’s New York Giants, Atlanta Falcons, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, along with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats before being drafted by the Breakers this year.
He is averaging 44.2 yards on 48 punts with New Orleans.
White had set seven school records at Mars, including punting average (39.1 yards), longest punt (61 yards), single season PATs (53) and points scored as a kicker (62).
SRU athletes named Academic All-American
LOCK HAVEN — Several Slippery Rock University athletes were recently named Academic All-Americans.
Baseball catcher Connor Hamilton posted a 3.91 grade point average as a Petroleum Engineering major. Tennis player Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and lacrosse player Charleigh Rondeau received second team honors. Track and field athletes Marianne Abdalah and Jena Reinheimer made third team.
Cross country athlete Jason Goodman earned his third career Academic All-American honor with a place on the first team.
All-Butler County dead heat for win
WASHINGTON, Pa. — When Sinful Sundae and Moneymatters Devie crossed the wire together Thursday during harness racing action Thursday at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows, it set up an all-Butler County dead heat for the win.
Slippery Rock resident Brady Brown drove Sinful Sundae for trainer Steve Schoeffel of Evans City. Brown also owns the 3-year-old gelding with Virginia and Kathy Schoeffel of Evans City. Moneymatters Devie was driven by Shawn Johnston for his dad, owner/trainer Gary Johnston, both of Evans City.
The horses deadlocked in a $7,500 Conditioned Trot.
Brown added a second win with Codys Watching in a $9,000 Conditioned Pace.
