Ohio driver gets best of All-Star field

BUFFALO TWP — The rear right tire was wobbly, but the driving couldn't have been any steadier.

Kenny Jacobs started on the pole for the 35-lap All-Star Sprint feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway, took the lead from Kittanning's Rod George on the 10th lap and maintained it for his 98th career All-Star feature victory.

George began the race up front beside Jacobs and led for the first 10 laps. Jacobs passed him when George went to the bottom groove to avoid lap traffic.

"Rod's been doing this for a long time and he has a zillion laps in here," Jacobs said. "When I switched to the top because he went to the bottom, I was surprised by how good the top was. That's where I should have run from the start."

The Holmesville, Ohio, driver won his first feature at Lernerville in about 15 years. He ran his first race here in 1978.

Paul McMahan of Nashville, Tenn., finished second and George took third.

Jacobs' eventual victory was put in jeopardy on the 21st lap, when he came high off the fourth turn and caught the wall with his right rear tire.

"I was hoping the back of the car hit the wall, but the tire got it," Jacobs said. "Yeah, I was worried. It (tire) was shaking pretty good. I had to back-pedal the throttle a bit around the turns, but it was OK."

"When that happened, I thought I had a chance," McMahan said. "But the center of the tire wasn't damaged and the car held up."

The night began as a good one for McMahan, the veteran World of Outlaws driver who is behind the wheel of Rick Ferkel's No. 0 car this season. He had the fastest time in qualifying at 13.023 seconds. He then won the fast dash, taking the six-lap event ahead of runner-up Greg Wilson.

McMahan has yet to win a feature in Ferkel's car this year. Ferkel, one of the original Outlaws drivers, has 18 career Outlaws feature wins and 12 career All-Star Sprint triumphs.

"I missed my flight and didn't get here until around 6 p.m.," McMahan said. "Rick and his crew had the car ready. ¿ It's a lot of fun out here. I haven't had fun in a while, but I'm having fun tonight.

"I believe in myself. I felt I could win races in this car right off the get-go. It just hasn't happened yet."

Jacobs was ecstatic it happened for him.

"This really is a thrill," he said. "I turned 53 yesterday and there wasn't a soul out there as old as I am, so this feels pretty good.

"This is only the second night out for this new race team we've put together. The first time was at Attica, and I pulled the car off the track after five laps, I was so horrible."

McMahan excelled on the low groove, but said his line wore thin with about 10 laps remaining in the feature.

"We were pretty good, but Kenny had the better car at the end," McMahan said.

In other features:

Alan Dellinger, driving Mike Blose's No. 5 car as Blose is recovering from an injury, won the Late Model feature, holding off Alex Ferree off the final turn.

Dellinger took the lead from pole-sitter Dave Hess on the 12th lap and never lost it. He posted his second career feature win at Lernerville.

"It's always fun winning when you're the underdog and you're not racing all the time," Dellinger said. "I have to thank the Bloses for giving me the opportunity to drive this car while he's hurt."

Bob Egley of Kittanning started in the first row of the Pure Stock feature and held off Joe Kelley for the checkered flag.
