UPMC Center for Sports Medicine will sponsor the first Student Athlete Leadership Academy from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 5 at Robert Morris University.
All high schools are invited to nominate up to six rising junior or senior male and female athletes who are positive role models and have demonstrated leadership capabilities to attend the full-day workshop, which is supported by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Amanda Skidmore, Olivia Vasey and Sadie Marak of Butler were members of the Pittsburgh Power 12-and-under fast-pitch softball team that captured a tournament title in Wheeling, W.Va., recently, winning all seven of its games.The Power also finished second in a tournament in Zanesville, Ohio.Other team members include Lauren Hackett, Lauren Hunt, Tara Llewellyn, Nicole Luffy, Amanda Shepard, Kelsey Squeich, D.J. Ufolla, Kaley Wisnewski and Kaylee Zozos.
Dylan Slusser, 13, who attends Moniteau High School, qualified for the 23rd annual American Motocross Association/Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships Aug. 1 through 6, which will be held at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.This will be Slusser's fifth trip to nationals, his best finish being 10th place in 1999. He has been racing for the past seven years, has won more than 100 traces and competes almost each weekend at District 5 in Western Pennsylvania.
Grove City College women's tennis player Megan Hulick earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Women's At-Large First-Team honors Friday.The Butler grad, who was a four-year starter for Wolverines, captured Presidents' Athletic Conference crowns in No. 1 singles and doubles.She graduated summa cum laude May 14 with a bachelor's degree in computer information systems and earned a 4.0 GPA.
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State outfielder Brad Corley signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, school officials announced.Corley was taken by the Pirates last week in the second round of the baseball draft. He signed his contract in Pittsburgh the day before he is expected to report to Single-A Williamsport to begin play with the Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League.Corley was an early selection despite a disappointing junior season in which he hit .316 with five home runs and 40 RBIs As a sophomore, he hit .380 and was tied for second in the Southeastern Conference with 19 homers.The native of Louisville, Ky., was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 16th round of the 2002 draft but opted to play at Mississippi State.
