PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers signed eight players to their practice squad Saturday, a day after each player failed to make the final 53-man roster.

The Steelers signed wide receivers David Gilreath and Toney Clemons, offensive linemen John Malecki and Ryan Lee, tight end Jamie McCoy, linebacker Marshall McFadden, safety Damon Cromartie-Smith and cornerback Josh Victorian.

Clemons was a seventh-round draft choice this spring. This is the second straight season on the practice squad for Cromartie-Smith. Gilreath played well during the preseason, catching five passes for 78 yards.

PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh coach Paul Chryst suspended six players for Saturday's season opener against Youngstown State.Freshman running back Rushel Shell, wide receivers Chris Davis and Ronald Jones, defensive linemen Tyrone Ezell and Shayne Hale and defensive back Anthony Gonzalez did not dress for what Chryst termed “disciplinary reasons.”Shell, a Hopewell grad and the all-time leading rusher in Pennsylvania high school history, is expected to be a major contributor this season. He struggled with injuries during training camp, however, and Chryst said earlier in the week he wasn't sure how available Shell would be against the Penguins.

WASHINGTON — A day after announcing that Stephen Strasburg will start only twice more this season, Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson met with the star right-hander to explain the decision.Johnson was joined by general manager Mike Rizzo and pitching coach Steve McCatty.Strasburg, who is 15-6 with a 2.94 ERA and leads the National League with 195 strikeouts, had Tommy John surgery to replace an elbow ligament two years ago.

NEW YORK — Andy Roddick's retirement party rocks on.The 2003 U.S. Open champion, who last week announced he would retire after he was done at Flushing Meadows, advanced to the fourth round Sunday with a 7-5, 7-6 (1), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Fabio Fognini of Italy.

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks have waived tight end Kellen Winslow, keeping true to past form of tinkering with their roster even after final training camp cuts are made.

ATLANTA — A 20-year-old fan from Tennessee was drinking alcohol before he fell to his death in the Georgia Dome and struck another man, who was injured, authorities said Saturday.Isaac Grubb of Lenoir City, Tenn., was killed Friday when he somehow fell over a 33-inch railing.
