Four scores and many more to go?
SLIPPERY ROCK — Take advantage of the other's misfortune.
Slippery Rock did. Edinboro didn't.
The combination translated into a 28-14 SRU college football victory Saturday night at N.Kerr Thompson Stadium.
The Rock (5-1, 2-1) trailed 14-7 late in the first half when Brandon Burley blocked an Edinboro punt, seemingly giving SRU possession at the Fighting Scots' 9-yard line with 1:33 left in the half.
Instead, a defensive holding penalty and personal foul call gave Edinboro a first down near midfield. Alex Romanias wound up pushing a 45-yard field goal attempt wide left as time expired.
"That gave us momentum going into halftime, them not scoring there," SRU coach George Mihalik said. "It was big not falling behind by two scores."
Instead, The Rock posted two scores itself in the third quarter. Robert Doiley returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown four plays into the third period, only to have an illegal block penalty wipe it out.
Akeem Satterfield capped a four-play, 46-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run moments later to knot the game.
"Doiley's return was an electrifying play," Mihalik said. "Even though it didn't count, it fired up the entire team."
"It was too bad it was called back," Doiley said. "But we're gonna get one, maybe next week. That's how I look at it. I have a lot of faith in our punt return team."
Satterfield's 1-yard TD run capped an 11-play, 68-yard drive on SRU's next possession. The bruising back had 40 carries for 147 yards on the night, including 28 carries in the second half.
"Akeem is a workhorse. That's the type of back he is. But I didn't realize he had that many carries," Mihalik said.
"Yeah, he wore our defense down," Edinboro coach Scott Browning said. "But we weren't generating first downs on offense, either, and that didn't help any."
The Scots (4-2, 1-2) were primed to knot the game at 21 late in the third quarter. On first down from The Rock 37, Cody Harris found Josh Brown on a post pattern.
As Brown streaked toward the end zone, Andre Freeman caught him from behind, tackled him at the 1-yard line and knocked the ball loose. Doiley recovered it in the end zone for a touchback.
"It was a big play by them, but we didn't secure the football there," Browning said. "That was a critical mistake.
"If we tie the game at 21 right there, the whole landscape of this game changes."
Doiley said the turnover was a result of a pursuit drill The Rock runs in practice.
"We practice pursuing ball carriers and jarring the ball out on the tackle," he said. "It paid off there."
The Rock marched 80 yards on 12 plays with the next possession, Satterfield scoring his fourth touchdown on a 1-yard run with 11:02 left in the game.
Satterfield estimated his sore ankle to be at 75 percent after the game.
"But my ankle feels pretty good tonight," he said, smiling.
SRU quarterback Ryan Sabo completed 17 of 23 passes for 192 yards, connecting with five different receivers. He was not sacked while The Rock got to Edinboro's Harris five times. Sophomores Aaron Moul and Jeff Thompson had 1.5 sacks each.
SRU managed only one touchdown in its previous two games.
"Our offensive line took the game over," Sabo said. "When your running game is going like ours was tonight, the play-action passes are there.
"Our offense opened up really well in this game."
