Harrisburg asks bankruptcy for 'overwhelming debt'

HARRISBURG — Financially distressed Harrisburg is seeking bankruptcy with a court filing signed by a member of the City Council.

The petition cites “overwhelming debt” and lists about $458 million in creditors and claims.

The filing says the city is in “imminent jeopardy” from six pending legal actions by creditors related to the trash incinerator. It says the city can’t pay judgments, or even a significant part of them, and still provide for the health and safety of its residents.

The filing follows a 4-to-3 vote by the council to authorize it and comes amid a dispute among the city’s elected officials over the details of a state-sponsored plan to address its money problems.
