CLEARFIELD TWP — A family of three escaped with their lives but nothing else early this morning when fire swept through their mobile home.

“They were lucky,” said Chief Kevin Hesidenz of the East Butler Volunteer Fire Department.

James Smith, fiancee Melissa Wood and their 2-year-old daughter, Grace, were asleep in their home on Dalmagro Road about 2:15 a.m. when he awoke suddenly.

“(Smith) sat up in bed and said, ‘The trailer’s on fire.’”

“They lost everything,” Hesidenz said.

The family suffered smoke inhalation in the fire, he said.

Smith, who had a cut to the leg, was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital. Grace, too, was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons.

The blaze is not considered suspicious.

The mobile home, about one mile north of Old Route 422, was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters got there.

“It was pretty well destroyed,” Hesidenz said.

The Butler chapter of the American Red Cross was called to help the family, who are staying with Smith’s parents in Butler Township, authorities said.

Assisting the East Butler fire department were firefighters from Lick Hill, Herman, Chicora and Oneida Valley.
