Helicopters were to spray for black flies along several creeks and rivers in the region today, according to a media release from state Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-10th.

The spraying operation started Thursday and includes the Youghiogheny, Kiskiminetas and Conemaugh rivers and the Connoquenessing, Neshannock, Slippery Rock, Mahoning, Redbank and Loyalhanna creeks.

The helicopters will be dispersing Vectobac 12AS, a bacterial larvicide. It is not a chemical product and is the only substance used in Pennsylvania waterways for black fly suppression, according to the release.

ZELIENOPLE — Motorists who drive on Fanker Road will have to travel on a detour after Thursday.The road will be closed Thursday to repair the culvert bridge over Scholar's Run and move the road.The detour will go through High Acres and Lancaster Township. Lancaster has agreed to have a detour set up for travelers and the road will be weight restricted.Jackson Township manager Chris Rearick said at the latest, construction will be complete by mid-November. However, project contractor Gregori Construction has pipes already in place for work, pointing toward earlier completion.Signs have been posted on Route 19 and more will be placed on Route 288.

SAXONBURG — An electronic recycling collection for residents of six municipalities will be from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Saxonburg Fire Company grounds on Horne Avenue.The event is only for residents of Saxonburg, and Jefferson, Winfield, Penn, Clinton and Middlesex townships.For information or a listing of acceptable items to recycle, residents should call their municipal office or visit www.saxonburgpa.com.
