JACKSON TWP — Administrators in the Seneca Valley School District have already voluntarily taken a pay freeze in an effort to help close a $10 million budget deficit, and the school board decided Monday night it will ask the school’s teachers’ union to do the same.

Board President Robert Hill said he would approach the union soon to ask that it agree to a voluntary salary freeze for teachers for the next school year.

The school board’s meeting Monday was again dominated by talks of cuts to programs and classes in an effort to bridge a budget deficit that must be closed by the end of June.

One program that was saved Monday night was the JROTC program when the board voted to rehire an assistant and to hire a new instructor. The change was made possible financially when district administrators agreed to take the one-year pay freeze.

The district has a preliminary 2011-12 budget that plans for $89 million in revenue but $99 million in expenditures, a gap that must be bridged before the school board can approve a final budget.
