SAXONBURG — The South Butler School District will revise an athletic policy to reduce the number of student athlete concussions.

The new district policy will require every student to have a baseline impact test, superintendent Dale Lumley said.

In addition, it will include education about concussions for parents, teachers and coaches.

A policy committee meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Knoch Middle School Library to look at this issue.

At a school board meeting Wednesday night, the parent of a child who suffered a concussion implored board members to strengthen the existing policy.

Patty Burdett of Winfield Township described her family’s ordeal after her daughter, Krista, a sophomore, suffered a concussion during a girl’s varsity soccer match.

Krista’s symptoms were “immediate and severe,” Burdett said. She could not walk without assistance, was sensitive to sound and light and suffered a headache.

Burdett credits a school athletic trainer and an impact test her daughter took by chance for Krista’s recovery, which took nine weeks.

Burdett wants all student athletes to be required to take the test.
