Results of runner's autopsy are awaited
PITTSBURGH — The results of an autopsy for a Cranberry Township man who died while participating in a race Sunday are pending.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office did an autopsy on Monday on Michael Kovacic, 32, who collapsed near the finish line of the EQT Pittsburgh 10-Miler race.
The medical examiner is waiting on results from blood work and tissue examination before citing a cause of death. This process could take eight to 24 weeks, according to the office.
Kovacic collapsed on the race course at 9:45 a.m. and was treated at the scene. Soon after, he was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m.
His body has not been released to a funeral home, and the office had no funeral home information.
The race, which started in 2013, had more than 4,000 participants. The course ran from Station Square through the Strip District and the North Side before finishing downtown.
