FREEPORT — Firefighters on Wednesday night prevented a bedroom blaze from spreading to the rest of a house on High Street.

Chief Scott Jones of the Freeport Volunteer Fire Department said the cause of the fire at 725 High Street was likely electrical.

Jones said both a medical machine and an alarm clock were plugged into an outlet in the second floor bedroom.

No one was injured.

Jones said homeowner Joyce Shoop was sleeping in a recliner on the first floor when the fire started.

“She was awakened to a smoke detector,” he said.

Shoop fled the house. Her husband, Greg Shoop, wasn’t home.

Jones said the fire was under control about 30 minutes after crews began dousing the flames.

“We kept it to the second floor bedroom,” he said.

Firefighters switched off periodically to stay fresh.

“We made a point of rotating crews,” Jones said.

A damage estimate was unavailable, and Jones didn’t know if the couple was insured.

The Buffalo, Eureka, Harrison Hills, Sarver, Saxonburg and South Buffalo volunteer fire departments assisted Freeport at the scene.

Roughly 80 firefighters responded to the 11 p.m. 911 call. Half that number remained there the entire time.

Jones said the call initially came through as an alarm for a commercial building, resulting in the large turnout.

Crews left the house by 1:30 a.m. today.
