Man guilty of stabbing Pittsburgh police dog

PITTSBURGH — A man was convicted Monday afternoon of fatally stabbing a Pittsburgh police dog and 10 of 11 other charges he faced in an incident that prompted state lawmakers to stiffen the penalty for harming police animals.

An Allegheny County judge did not immediately set a sentencing date after 22-year-old John Rush, of Stowe Township, was convicted of a charge of torture of a police animal in January.

Police say Rush stabbed the dog in the back and wounded two officers who were trying to arrest in on warrants for violating probation and failing to register as a sex offender. He was also charged with burglarizing a building, but the jury acquitted him of that charge.

Rush faces up to seven years in prison on the dog charge alone, which now carries up to 10 years in prison.
