Answers to proposed VA facility may come at Aug. 27 meeting
BUTLER TWP — Township officials hope answers related to the troubled VA Butler Healthcare facility will come next month.
At the township commissioners meeting Monday night, officials announced that U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-3rd, of Butler will hold a meeting Aug. 27 about the project, which originally was supposed to be in the township.
The public meeting will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion hall, 150 Memorial Lane.
Township manager Ed Kirkwood said Kelly initially announced earlier this year that he would like to hold such a meeting, and said township officials worked with him to get this meeting scheduled.
The $127 million, 168,000-square-foot facility originally was set to be built in Butler Township on the Deshon Woods property off Route 68. The facility is to replace the VA health center on New Castle Road.
The property’s original developer, Westar, came under government investigation in 2013 and ultimately had its contract terminated. The property was then acquired by a second developer, Oxford Development.
But after a second round of bidding in 2014, VA officials awarded the project to developer Cambridge Healthcare Solutions, which moved the project to the Herold farm site on North Duffy Road in Center Township.
Kirkwood said he has requested that the VA’s deputy secretary attend the meeting, but he has not yet heard if that will happen.
