FREEPORT — The Freeport School Board will vote in the future on closing the district's aging junior high school.

J. Greer Hayden, of HHSDR Architects and Engineers, presented the board Wednesday night with five options for its buildings.

"This is our first look at the feasibility study," said Mark Shoaf, board president.

He said the board hopes the community will support building a new junior high school or expanding the senior high school to include grades seven and eight.

Both the junior and senior high school buildings need to be brought up to the Pennsylvania Department of Education building code, said Hayden.

In ranking the buildings, he said the Buffalo and South Buffalo elementary schools, which were both recently renovated, are in excellent condition; the high school athletic complex is in good condition; the kindergarten, senior high school and administration buildings are in fair condition; and the junior high and football stadium are in poor condition.

Hayden did not provide cost estimates for renovations or new construction, but plans to present them at a January 2011 meeting.

The board hopes that construction will take place between 2013 and 2018, with a 2015 target date, said Shoaf.
