Driver hurt as car crashes into hair salon
KITTANNING — An elderly Butler County woman was hurt Tuesday morning when she accidentally drove her car into the side of a hair salon in the borough, police said.
The wreck happened just four days after a similar accident left a woman dead when a driver plowed her sport utility vehicle into a hair salon in Armstrong County.
Dorothy Powell, 81, of Winfield Township was treated for an unknown back injury following Tuesday’s crash on South McKean Street in Kittanning.
Police said Powell was pulling into a parking space at the Holly Kennedy Beauty Salon about 11:45 a.m. when she momentarily lost control of her 2010 Chevrolet Impala. She apparently had driven there for an appointment.
“She inadvertently hit the gas pedal instead of the brake,” said Kittanning Police Chief Bruce Mathews.
The car traveled over the curb and into the north side of the brick building, which houses the salon on the first floor and apartments on the second floor.
The salon owner was inside but there were no customers. The car never penetrated the building, which had minimal damage.
Upstairs, one tenant was home and jolted by the crash. He was not hurt.
Powell, who was shaken up, was in the salon when the ambulance, fire department and police got there.
“She was complaining of back pain,” Mathews said.
Powell was taken by ambulance to ACMH Hospital. Her condition was not known this morning.
Police said she was not charged.
The accident is eerily similar to one that happened about 11:30 a.m. Friday in Jefferson Township.
In that wreck, Carol Peters, 74, of Butler may have hit the wrong pedal when her 2008 Subaru Forester slammed into the Scissor Heaven hairstyling and tanning salon on North Pike Road, state police said.
The SUV struck a large window in the front of the building and hit a waiting customer, Janet Huth, 67, of Winfield Township. Huth was pronounced dead at the scene.
