Creosote buildup starts chimney fire

CENTER TWP — Firefighters Monday night extinguished a chimney blaze at a Brown Road house.

Chief Nathan Wulff of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Company said no damage was done to the residence of Alice Saul at 5157 Brown Road.

“It stayed contained within the chimney itself,” Wulff said.

He said creosote buildup within the chimney caught fire, which was quickly under control after crews arrived.

Firefighters used bags of dry chemicals to put out the flames.

The obstruction was cleared and thermal imaging was used to ensure there were no flames spreading in the walls.

More than 20 firefighters responded to the 6:38 p.m. 911 call.

The Prospect and Butler Township Fire District 3 volunteer fire departments as well as Butler Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Crews cleared the scene at 7:17 p.m.

Wulff said a neighbor reported the fire.

He advised homeowners to regularly clean their chimneys to avoid creosote buildup.
