Festival raises $80,000-$90,000 for Miracle League field

CRANBERRY TWP — Despite rain at the beginning of the 39th Cranberry Community Days, it did not put a damper on the festivities.

Bruce Mazzoni, chairman of the township supervisors and treasurer of the community chest, said the July 9-11 event overall was a great success.

Mazzoni estimates the community chest raised about $80,000 to $90,000 for its 2016 Project of the Year for the Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania, but the official tally won't be announced until the August board meeting.

The community chest lost some funds because the rain made the fields wet where cars normally would park at the Community Park, he said. Typically, the group makes $15,000 to $20,000 from the $5 parking fees in the fields.

Last year, it raised roughly $105,000 for the 2015 project of the Volunteer Firefighter Initiative at Community Days, he said.

The money raised this year will pay to resurface the Miracle League ballfield at the Dick's Sporting Goods Sportsplex in Graham Park. The second part of the project is a baseball-themed playground by the ballfield.

The overall goal is to raise $600,000 for the project.
