Shazier has feeling in his legs, father saysPITTSBURGH — The father of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier says his son has made significant progress since suffering a spinal injury in Cincinnati last month.Vernon Shazier told WPXI-TV in Pittsburgh that his is “a long ways from where he was on that Monday night when he was lying on the field.” Ryan Shazier left the first quarter of Pittsburgh’s victory over the Bengals on Dec. 4 with a spinal injury. He underwent spinal stabilization surgery on Dec. 6. The extent of his injury has not been disclosed, though Vernon Shazier said Ryan has some feeling in his legs.Vernon Shazier said the family has decided to keep the details of Ryan’s injury private until he is ready to discuss it. Ryan has made two appearances at Heinz Field in recent weeks for the playoff-bound Steelers.When asked if he believes his son will play football game, Vernon Shazier said yes.

Haley says New Years incident ‘non-issue’PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley says the team told him an incident at a restaurant last weekend near Heinz Field is a “non-issue.”Haley’s wife Christine was involved in what Pittsburgh police described as a minor altercation at Tequila Cowboy on Sunday night a few hours after the Steelers wrapped up the regular season with a victory over the Cleveland Browns. Haley himself was not involved in the incident, though he did sustain a minor injury at some point during the night.Haley said Thursday the situation was “not of my doing,” adding the team has assured him it is not concerned about it going forward. No charges were filed.Haley says his “sole focus” is on the AFC North champions preparing for the playoffs. Pittsburgh will play a to-be-determined opponent in the divisional round on Jan. 14.

Winter storm causes havoc in NHL, NFLThe NHL game in Boston between the Bruins and Florida Panthers was among the sports events disrupted Thursday by the winter storm that hit the East Coast.Rugged weather also delayed the New York Giants’ search for a new coach. They were set to interview Eric Studesville, the recently fired Broncos’ running backs coach, but that meeting will now take place next week.

Bears interview Vikings’ EdwardsLAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Chicago Bears say they have interviewed Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards for their coaching job.The 50-year-old Edwards has coached 28 seasons — 20 in the NFL — and has been Minnesota’s defensive coordinator since 2014. The NFC North champion Vikings gave up a league-low 275.9 yards and 15.8 points per game. They were also second against the run and the pass.
