Thursday will be a busy volleyball night for Butler County teams in the WPIAL Class AA volleyball playoffs.

Mars, Knoch and Freeport will each be in action that evening in first-round matchups.

Mars will face Beaver for a 6 p.m. game at West Allegheny. Knoch will play at Montour at 7:30 p.m. and Freeport will host Thomas Jefferson at 7:30 p.m.

Freeport will serve as a host site for a first-round Class A match — Elderton vs. Laurel — at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Autumn Burke had 11 kills, 10 digs and five blocks and Tawnie Osborne had 13 assists and Brittany Beatty had 12 more to lead the Butler County Community College women's volleyball team to a 30-24, 30-18, 30-20 victory over Garrett County Community College Monday.Krista Ebner and Katherine Smith had eight kills each and Stephanie Lawson had 23 digs and four aces for the Pioneers.BC3 (31-7) will host the Region XX Championship Saturday. The double-elimination tournament also includes Howard Community College (ranked No. 4 in Division III) and Potomac State.Butler will face Howard at 9 a.m., then Howard will play Potomac State, then Butler plays Potomac and so on until two teams are eliminated.

PITTSBURGH — Left-hander Dave Williams, the only Pirates starter to win 10 games last season, chose not to go to salary arbitration and signed a $1.4 million, one-year contract Monday with Pittsburgh.Williams didn't secure his job as the Pirates' fifth starter until the final week of spring training, then led the staff in victories by going 10-11 with a 4.41 ERA in 25 starts. He missed his final four starts with a strain in his left rib cage.The 26-year-old Williams pitched his first career shutout Aug. 14 at Houston and was 7-4 on the road, but was 3-7 with 16 home runs allowed at PNC Park.Williams gets a raise of $1,070,000 from the $330,000 he made last season. The deal includes incentives of $40,000 for 160 innings or 50 games pitched, $60,000 for 180 innings or 60 games pitched and $125,000 for 200 innings.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons made Vinny Testaverde look every bit like a 41-year-old quarterback.Michael Vick didn't look much better.Testaverde fumbled three times in the first 17½ minutes, leading to two touchdowns, and the Falcons dealt New York another road loss, beating the Jets 27-14 on Monday night.The first 17 points were handed over by Testaverde, whose three fumbles tied a career worst. He also threw an interception as New York dropped to 0-4 on the road this season, averaging a mere 10.3 points in those losses.All beat up, Testaverde left the game late in the third quarter with a right Achilles' injury, having gone 11-of-18 for 139 yards. He was replaced by Brooks Bollinger.
