Amazing Art Superheroes, colorful fish adorn The Art Center
Vibrancy is the word for the new exhibits set to open Friday at The Art Center, 344. S. Main St.
The Superheroes & Villains Art Exhibit and Poster Contest as well as a display of the brightly colored artwork of Tiffany McClymonds London will open with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Admission is free, and light refreshments will be served.
The contest features the Superhero poster genre with a local twist, according to Paul Scanlon, president of the Associated Artists of Butler County.
All the contest submissions must have incorporated an identifiable scene from the artist's community, along with the superhero or villain.
The contest will be judged by Butler's own Mike Rehm, who is best known in the art community as "Uncle Mike." As a matter of fact, that's how he signs his artwork.
Rehm was with AmeriCorps from 2003 to 2005. His involvement with the Associated Artists of Butler County allowed him to be instrumental in creating the graphics for the afterschool art program and working on the Kid's Art Center gallery, Scanlon said.
Rehm currently works on freelance art projects. He designed the 60-foot mural in the children's department at the Butler Public Library and designed a curriculum guide cover and illustrated summer school materials for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. His was the design for the bicentennial activity book, T-shirts and posters for the Butler Chamber of Commerce. He has worked on numerous other art projects around the area.
He holds a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
Cash awards of $100 will be awarded to best of show winners in each of the poster contest's two categories: age 18 and younger, and older than 18, Scanlon said.Local artist Tiffany McClymonds London also will host a solo art exhibit in the Members Gallery from June 19 through July 10.She was born and raised in Portersville. In 2003, she received a bachelor of fine arts degree with an emphasis in painting and printmaking from Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont."While there I met my husband, Tad London, and he introduced me to hunting and fly-fishing," London said, describing the influence for some of her work.She said she is eagerly anticipating her first solo exhibit at The Art Center."My collection is based on the outdoor activities that my husband and I enjoy doing together, especially fly-fishing," she said.London wants her art to attract the attention of fellow anglers and hunters."I like to add my own colorful twist to the steelhead and trout we often catch. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place, and it is important that we take care of our beautiful rivers, streams and lakes, not just here in Pennsylvania, but all over the world."London's oil paintings and original silkscreen prints are priced between $75 and $300.
