The Butler Shocks 15-and-under AAU girls basketball team won the NAYS Tournament recently at Seneca Valley Intermediate School.

The players are ninth graders at Butler Intermediate and went undefeated during the regular basketball season.

The players include Angela Byrnes, Jenny Lesniewski, Tess Crispin, Rachel Barry, Elizabeth Schultz, Emily Miller, Elza Hartung, Erin Kelly and Maria Baroffio.

Members of the Butler girls basketball team received awards at the recent Lady Tornado Basketball Banquet.Maria Klutinoty won the John A. Natili Academic Award, Heather Spangler won the Butler Elks Defensive Player Award, Kelly Miller won the Cubs MVP Award, Danielle Koehring earned the Butler YMCA Spirit, Mind, Body Award and Amy Achesinski received the Impact Player Award.Gaining scholastic honors with a grade point average of 3.5 or above were Miller, Koehring, Klutinoty, Ashley Nocera, Kelley Crater, Kala Schnur, Samantha Karns, Susan Davidson and Shanna Kelly.

Butler graduate Matt Vensel, a junior goaltender on the Penn State University in-line hockey team, helped the Nittany Lions finish second in the national championship tournament recently.

Moniteau graduate Jess Flick, a pitcher on the Grove City College women's softball team, recorded a 5-2 victory over Penn-State-Altoona in the second game of a doubleheader recently.Flick allowed four hits in 6innings and took a shutout into the seventh. Grove City (7-2) has won six straight games for the first time since winning the President's Athletic Conference championship in 1998.

Knoch graduate Chase Rowe and Butler graduate Josh Gerstel were named PSAC Western Division Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.Slippery Rock University third baseman Rowe scored eight runs and collected three doubles and two homers in helping SRU win five of six games. He hit .692 (9-for-13) for the week and had four RBI.Clarion pitcher Gerstel struck out 11 in 10 innings in defeating California (Pa.), 3-1. He scattered nine hits and walked two.

Four Grove City College athletes received President's Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors recently.Rory Phillips, a senior javelin thrower, won the Grove City Invitational with a toss of 192 feet, 9 inches. He won the event by more than 14 feet.Sally Lewis, a senior jumper, won the long jump (16-6¾) and triple jump (34-1½) at the Grove City Invitational, then won the triple jump at the Slippery Rock Invitational.Junior women's golfer Mary Brown earned medalist honors at the PAC Invitational Thursday, shooting a season-low 39.Senior softball pitcher Allison Atwood won both ends of a doubleheader against Waynesburg, pitching a 1-0 nine-inning two-hit shutout in the opener. She won a 4-3 decision in relief in the nightcap.
