LEWISBURG — Jeff Gavin of Mars placed ninth in the boys 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 45.13 seconds at the PIAA Class AA swimming championships at Bucknell University Wednesday.

Knoch's Rachel Tano placed 16th in the 200 freestyle (2:01.35) to highlight the girls division.

Mars' 200 medley relay of Rachel Szymkowiak, Gabri Pierre, Chloe Pierre, Courtney Shields placed 19th with a time of 1:55.06, while Szymkowiak had a pair of 29th-place finishes — the 200 individual medley (2:20.65) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.05).

Butler Cubs boxer Joel Rehm beat John Cassamara in their bout in the Golden Gloves Tournament in Cranberry Township March 3.Rehm's next fight is Friday, when he takes on Andy Withium of South Park Friday at Palisades in McKeesport in the semifinals.

VILA REAL DE SANTO ANTONIO, Portugal — The U.S. women's soccer team won the Algarve Cup for the fifth time, beating Denmark 2-0 on goals by Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd.Lilly scored in the 12th minute after Abby Wambach chipped the ball over the defense. Goalkeeper Heidi Johansen came off her line and Lilly, the U.S. captain, scored from 24 yards, her 119th international goal.The United States also won the Algarve Cup in 2000 and from 2003-5. In January, the Americans beat host China 2-0 on their way to winning the Four Nations Tournament. U.S. coach Greg Ryan added more veteran players to his roster for this tournament.
