WASHINGTON, Pa. — Nezblanc, a five-year-old gelding trained and guided by Evans City’s Aaron Johnston, scored a 9-1 upset victory in harness racing Thursday at The Meadows.

The win earned for Johnston $12,800 in the Conditioned Trot.

Also winning was Rose Run Vern in a $9,000 Conditioned Trot. The five-year-old gelding is owned by Terrian Richards of Cranberry Township.

Center Alex Mack is one-and-done with the 49ers, meaning Trey Lance will be fielding snaps from someone else in 2022 and beyond.

Mack, after suspicions intensified in recent months, is retiring from a 13-year NFL career out of Cal, according to national reporter Mike Silver.

In another 49ers retirement, they are signing running back Frank Gore to a ceremonial one-day contract.

While Mack steered clear of the 49ers’ offseason program the past six weeks, coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch dropped hints that Mack was leaning toward retirement but left it up to him to declare his intentions.

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad shot the lowest round by an amateur in the 77-year history of the U.S. Women's Open, a 6-under 65 that gave her the early lead Thursday at Pine Needles.

Because she’s an amateur, Lindblad wouldn’t be able to collect the record $1.8 million first-place prize if she holds on to win the event. She would have had to declare as a professional before the tournament began.

Lindblad finished tied 30th at 6-over 292 in her only other U.S. Women’s Open appearance in 2020.

SAN FRANCISCO — LeBron James is a billionaire, a designation coming from Forbes magazine.

In addition to nearly $350 million in career earnings in the NBA, James' business interests have nudged him over the threshold, making him the second athlete to eclipse the financial milestone, the magazine said.

Heading into the final year of his contract with the Lakers (James is eligible for an extension), his off-court earnings now dwarf what he makes playing basketball. Among his largest investments are his production company — SpringHill Co. — and shares in the Fenway Sports Group, which owns Liverpool F.C.

James, 37, is widely expected to pursue a larger role in team ownership once he retires from basketball.
