Penguins, UPMC plan hockey facility in Cranberry

CRANBERRY TWP — The township could become the new home for a first-of-its-kind hockey-only training, practice and sports medicine facility for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The team and UPMC, the region's dominant hospital network, hope to open the facility near Cranberry Woods, an office park that includes the headquarters for Westinghouse Electric.

According to published reports, UPMC wants to open the facility in the summer of 2014.

With the news of the project, township officials are poised to begin work to determine that such a project will fit in with the township's overall plan for development.

Jerry Andree, township manager, said this morning that township officials don't know many details about the project, but had been aware that UPMC and the Penguins were looking for a space in Cranberry.

The property being considered has an approved site plan but that does not include a training facility.

The property, adjacent to the Westinghouse campus, and next to the recently completed Hilton Garden Inn is in The Summit of Cranberry Woods, being developed by Don Rodgers.

Andree said the township's Community Development Departmentwill have to go through the project to determine if the property is proper for this type of development.
